Springfield

Springfield- 65km from Christchurch is the gateway from the Canterbury Plains to the mountains.

Springfield is a place with a lot of history; being the birthplace of Rewi Alley, a famous New Zealander. Springfield has been associated with the railway since the early days of rail in New Zealand, it reached it maximum in 1905 with over 5000 people living and working here putting in the tunnels and bridges that now service the Tranz Alpine ,one of the 10 best rail journey's in the world. Springfield has always been associated with the world famous Tranz Alpine train journey and in recent years has seen the movie industry discover something we always knew ; our beautiful back yard . Narnia The Lion , Witch and wardrobe , The Simpson Movie and the most recent  Bruids vlucht ( Brides Flight ) have been linked or filmed here.
